The BRM emerging artists showcase partay

BRM mags

So last night we trekked out in the blizzard to check out Beyond Race Magazines: Emerging Artist Showcase. The open Colt 45 bar might have gotten us there but the event itself was most definitely worth the trip.

brown rice family in motion

The first band  we saw was a reggae style group called the Brown Rice Family, whom I didn’t feel at first but eventually got the crowd jumping with their percussion section. I stopped hating. With two lead singers they ranged from a more laid back island stylee to more in your face revolt inspiring  jams. I’ll ride with them.

(music video HERE)

Esso

After The Brown Rice Family we saw Esso, a rapper from Harlem. As usual I was hating but again came around. He looked like he might just be another rapper but he tried pushing the boundries in 2010 by doing his own version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Heads Will Roll” and a song off his Michael Jackson Off The Wall inspired mixtape. Because he was the only performer without a band he made sure to keep his performance live by involving the audience in even jumping in there. Wasn’t mad.

Esso - The Party Freestyle

so so glo

The last performance was by far my favorite though. A group called the So So Glos sort of a slowed down punk band.

so so glo 3

They really killed it even after swigging a bottle of Evan Williams on stage.

So so glo jacket
If you have the chance to go check them out I highly encourage it. They had a lot of energy and their songs included such lines as “you’re just another pretty socialite in the crowd” and something about the revolution being on the bathroom stall. The shit was extremely enjoyable to jump around to and the hipster girls were getting really sweaty to it.

So So GLos- Isn’t It A Shame

fav couple

Additionally this was my favorite couple of the night. She looked like the cutest librarian I had ever seen and was murdering the dance floor. Her and her boyfriend (this dude) were arguing all night. I should have said something. MISS YOU.

Owner of mag and guy + Clayton patterson

Thanks to David Terra the publisher and founder of Beyond Race Magazine for putting on the event. He is seen here with  LOWER EAST SIDE LEGEND Clayton Patterson.

after party
This is a pic of the after party. Shit got real weird.

the best party in new york you didn’t know about

2913658725_a9b53cf3db1

Last night I sadly said goodbye to what might be the best party in New York City that no one ever knew about. Bar None is a magical place; a place I would of thought most unlikely for me to frequent and eventually come to love. A sports bar downtown - true, but far from the whole story. Bar None is one of the few places there is no pretension once inside. Literally people are there to be loud and get loose PERIOD.

30sainspan

Not to mention that its a saints bar so after the games its New York’s best southern rap party. I got the DJ to play Young Jeezy’s “who dat” 3 times last night holding a pitcher in one hand and a Jameson on the rocks in the other. Now that the super bowl is over I’ll have to go back to holding mediocre conversations at posh bars around the city :(. Till next season Bar None…I Love You.

thoughts on last nights samuel performance

img_8756

Last night I was lured away from hypem and my television and my couch for the Samuel concert (good choice by me)

In the small basement that is the Bowery Electric I looked around and felt like I was 29, not because I am having a quarter life crisis (true) or I’m an alcoholic (true) but because I am more than positive some people in there were 12, on a case by case basis though #notmad.

I also realized how small D-town NY is and just as incestuous as the plot of Cruel Intentions 2 (haven’t seen it but how I imagine it would be.

After some booze and talking to some girls about classes I am currently enrolled in (I miss school) Samuel made the party worthwhile.

What I took away from the night was that Samuel can put on a fucking show. There are some artists I might like to listen to but not want to see in concert. For instance I might listen to some Mike Posner joints (comparison = both sing and are white…fair?) but I don’t want to see dude on a stage.

This video is not the best quality due to me being in the back trying to meet groupies but has been made to prove a point. This dude has swagger on stage. (point is most clearly made at 00:17)

Dude willing to give me a quote - “Ah jeez man, it was a physical experience. No homo”

All in all the show was dope and if you have the chance go check him out before tickets start getting sups expensive.

In closing Samuel is someone to see live and best believe he gets love on my ipod shuffle.

telephoned

Remember that game telephone where someone would start of by saying I really like your shirt and ending with a fight when you think somebody says they banged your sister. Well Maggie Horn and Sammy Bannanas have applied the same concept with their amazing talent, putting some classic tunes through the proverbial telephone. Pseudo covers turning Pop Champagne into a Benny Benassi type club banger with no cheesy remix feeling is more than a feat its pure magic. Download the mixtape HERE.
